Are You Smarter Than A 10 Year Old (NDS)

Time for a confession. Your reviewer has only seen the Sky One show, Are You Smarter Than A Ten Year Old?, on two occasions. This is what he found: it's a pseudo Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?, where the lifelines are substituted for children.

These children are naturally very clever, and sometimes quite smug about the fact. This reviewer distinctly recalls wanting to have words with one particular cherub when watching the show, but decided that the authorities would not take kindly to him tracking the anklebiter in question down.

The other difference is the questions, which are based around subjects said children are doing at school. There are ten questions in all that need to be answered, with each taking the contestant a notch up the prize ladder, which reaches £100,000. Get there, and in true Bullseye-style the contestant is then given the option of gambling the lot for a £250,000 jackpot.

It shouldn't, therefore, be the trickiest game to convert to a Nintendo DS, and in the hands of Mindscape it clearly hasn't been. In spite of his much adorning the box, there's no Noel Edmonds in sight. Instead, a virtual character called Richard takes you through the rules of the game. Then, after a skippable rendition of the theme tune, you choose the first virtual child who will be your effective lifeline.

Now, with child in place, if you're stumped you can choose to Copy their answer (which means you're obliged to play it), or Peek at what they've written down. If you give a stupid answer they might jump in and use their Save. Otherwise you can walk away, take the cash and spend the night in the pub wondering why life has come to this.

It's all very straightforward and, overlooking the fact that it seemed to be the same subjects in the same position every game (of the ten questions, two are aimed at 6-year olds, two at 7-year olds, and so on, all the way up to 10), we set about answering questions. Game one was good fun and we tanked out at £2,500. We weren't, according to Richard, smarter than a 10-year old at all. In game two we won the quarter of a million, courtesy of some inspired guesswork. Hmmm, we thought. What can the game throw at us now to keep us interested?

Absolutely nothing, outside of one or two different difficulty levels. Not. A. Jot. No multiplayer, no interesting variants on the game. You just play the same game, with the same subjects, over and over again. Inside half an hour there's only Richard left enjoying it, and that's because he's not real.

A cynical cash-in, then, which is probably what you were expecting in the first place. For in spite of some half-decent production values, there's simply no game here to enjoy, and Are You Smarter Than A Ten Year Old? should be destined for a long, cold, hard life in the bargain bin.
