Risen

Welcome to the world of Faranga, where you have been shipwrecked on a tropical island with magical promise and a population torn apart by an ongoing war between three very different forces. There are the Outlaws which, as you might have guessed, don't have any respect for law and just want to survive through crime and theft. To counteract their activity there's the Inquisition who preach law, honour and recruit via press-gangs and finally there are Mages who are the only indigenous population on the island.

The world is complicated and the power struggle can be felt through the game's sixty to eighty hour experience. Gameplay is structured as you would expect from Deep Silver and the world is just as fleshed out and complex as any they have created before. Any item which you find can be used in any manner of ways.

If you find a fish you can, as disgusting as it seems, eat it on the spot gaining a little health or you can cook it using the proper equipment and gain lots of health. It sounds small but it's a very effective way of raising the immersive feel of the world and as you level you'll gain many more skills to interact with the environment.

It's simple and sometimes fails to enthral but as you gain access to magic it's really when the game comes into it's own.

There are some really imaginative spells at your disposal, including an interesting transformation technique which can change your physique and make you unbeatable for a short amount of time.

Risen tries very hard to dissuade you from making binary choices and you'll be making them very often. Some moral choices are easy such as stopping a brutish customer beating up prostitutes whereas others are much more complicated like with a snitch who has the choice of either being killed by the men he has shopped or being enrolled in the inquisition, neither of which sound appealing or viable for long term security.

This is just a brief snippet of our review of Risen in issue 34 of PCGZine which you can download by following the link on the right. Not only that but we also have a competition where you can win a 3D card and a copy of the game. So do yourself a favour and download our lovely magazine, it's free after all.
